Suggestions for Getting Your RV Ready for Winter Storage

How to prepare your RV for storage this winter.

Now that it’s officially fall, it’s time to think about storing your RV until warm weather returns.  However, storing your RV requires more effort than simply parking your RV and leaving it.  Here are some of the steps that you need to take to prepare your RV for storage this winter.

Drain Water

Draining your RV’s water system is the most important part of prepping your RV for winter storage.  This is because any water left in your RV’s system can freeze and cause significant damage to your fittings and lines.  When draining your RV, you need to empty out the following:

  • Freshwater tank
  • Waste tank
  • Pipes
  • Plumbing

After you’ve emptied the water out of these places, you need to pump nontoxic RV antifreeze through the entire water system.  This will clear out any remaining traces of water and prevent freezing as your RV sits this winter.

Conduct Exterior Maintenance

Once you’ve drained your RV, you need to inspect your RV’s exterior for any cracks, holes, or gaps that could allow water to get in where it shouldn’t.  For instance, you should look for and caulk holes in the following:

  • Roof
  • Sidewalls
  • Seams
  • Windows
  • Exterior doors
  • Access panels

Before resealing any holes in your RV’s exterior, speak to your RV dealer to help you choose the right sealant for your RV and your climate.  The wrong sealant might not set properly, leaving your RV susceptible to water damage while in storage.

Choose a Storage Location

When storing the RV for the winter, the ideal place is in an enclosed shelter, or at least under a roof.  However, if this is not possible, then try to park your RV in a place that is sheltered from the rain and wind as much as possible.  You should also park your RV away from trees that could fall during a major winter storm.

These are some of the important steps you should take to prepare your RV for storage this winter.  Looking for another way to keep your RV safe, no matter what the season?  Then make sure you have the right RV insurance in place.  For assistance with all your motorsports equipment insurance needs, contact the experts at Powersports Insurance Agency today.
